Port Alberni, British Columbia is a forested seaport rich with history. Located at the head of the Alberni Inlet, it’s named after Captain Don Pedro de Alberni, a Spanish officer who commanded the fort at Nootka on Vancouver Island's west coast in the late 1700’s. The traditional territory of the Tseshaht and Hupacasath tribes of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth (Nootka) Nation, the modern roots of Port Alberni are founded in the mining and logging industries, which made the town one of the most affluent in Canada for many years.
Today, a trip down the wide 50’s era boulevards of Port Alberni offers visitors a unique insight into the historic transition of a North American town: from rugged wilderness, to bustling industrial center, to environmentally conscious adventure playground. The city of Port Alberni is surrounded by popular tourist destinations such as Sproat Lake, Mount Arrowsmith, Cathedral Grove, and more. Port Alberni has a great climate with the average high temperature for the month of August being 25.2 degrees and the average low in January -0.5 degrees.
Home to some of the best Salmon fishing in the world, Port Alberni offers numerous world class fishing locations. Port Alberni is sometimes referred to as “The Salmon Capital of the World”.
