Fishing for salmon is the number one pastime in the summer months in the Alberni Valley. With great access to Barkley Sound, plenty of guides, tackle stores, accommodations, camp-sites, and restaurants you have everything you need for a great fishing holiday.

If you are interested in other activities, hiking and mountain climbing, kayaking, horseback riding, canoeing, rock climbing and rappelling, are all part of the Alberni Valley experience. the valley has a wide variety of trails to suit families with young children or the world’s most experienced hikers. The Alberni Valley is also famous as a destination for sporting events and tournaments, large and small. Whatever the age, whatever the activity, we have the facilities and the organizational abilities to make your big game a big success. Port Alberni is the only BC community to host each of the British Columbia Games: the Summer, Winter, Seniors and Disabled Games, and last year the city welcomed hockey players from around the planet at the World Under 17 Hockey Championships. Every February more than 600 athletes attend the Alberni Invitational School Wrestling Tournament, and in July and August the Alberni Valley Junior Prep Hockey Camp brings another 500 to the area.
Sports facilities include the Echo Aquatic and Fitness Centre; a multiplex with two regulation NHL-sized rinks; a 650-seat lighted softball diamond and track and field stadium, a lighted baseball diamond, and 20 other ball diamonds; six sand-based turf fields for soccer, rugby, and field hockey; an all-weather field and clubhouse; two equestrian show rings and 64-stall horse barn; the 14,000 square-foot Glenwood Centre, for indoor rock climbing, rollerblading, and more; 10 tennis courts, five lighted tennis courts, a shooting range and more.
